ooster booster

what can be better than to wake up to a beautiful sunrise in front of a surf spot?
our home for tonight...

We found ourselves in Stilbaai, a funny place with a beautiful beach and luckily a restaurant that is open after dark. Pretty much dead out of season, which suited us just fine: we had decided to camp in the small reserve at the point. Everyone had left after their sundowners and braais, we were completely alone to enjoy the peace and quiet and millions of starts. The local fishermen arrived with the sunrise to announce the first surf of the day.

watching the sunrise from our "tent"

our daily cup of local 'nespresso' from the supermarket saved our day!
Stilbaai town from the reserve
A great place to take photos of Pete surfing and the waves were just amazingly turquoise! The forecast hadn't looked promising, so we couldn't believe our eyes when we woke up and found cooking lines rolling down the point.

breakfast is ready!
this is right at the end of the wave... the low tide meant high speed sections close to the rocks. if you got this far down, then it you were normally feeling somewhat relieved.
as the tide came in, it got a whole lot more rippable, and all that speed could be converted into gouging turns!
taking an insider could cost you a fin. tiptoeing was the right call.

Lookout -  always a pretty sight but today without any surf

After two days we carried on to Keurboomstrand to spend the weekend there.

And of course surf!

We were on our way to Addo to do some gaming with Billy and Les and decided for the scenic drive up the old road to the N2. The stroll through the forest in Nature's Valley is just so rewarding. A forgotten jungle, still to be explored.

We had a little different experience in Addo this time. Instead of tons of elephant we watched a mongoose roam the veld, jackals on food hunting missions, small and big birds, herds of zebra and of course the always present warthogs in all shapes and sizes.

It must have been dung beetles season for it made it quite a challenge not driving over them as they happily rolled their shit balls across the road.

As we finally came across elephant it was a pleasure watching them herd around the water hole. There were many babies amongst the herds and interesting and funny to see how protected they got while flopping around their little trunks and body.

Thanks Zebra for the lovely modelling, I couldn't have chosen better light! Beautiful morning in Addo as always.
what's up guys? never seen stripes before?
oh my, buff!

lucky to see this one - thanks to the birders in our car

And we ended a great holiday with a few days in Keurbooms with the family.

another cool sunset at first beach
